Fraunhofer IGD

FRAUNHOFER IGD is the world’s leading institute for applied research in Visual Computing. Visual Computing is image- and model-based information technology and includes computer graphics, computer vision, as well as virtual and augmented reality.

In simple terms, the FRAUNHOFER researchers in Darmstadt, Rostock, Graz and Singapore are turning images into information and extracting information from images. In cooperation with its partners, technical solutions and market relevant products are created.

Prototypes and integrated solutions are developed in accordance with customized requirements. In doing so, FRAUNHOFER IGD places users at the forefront, providing them with technical solutions to facilitate computer work and make it more efficient.

Owing to its numerous innovations, FRAUNHOFER IGD raises man-machine interaction to a new level. Man is able to work in a more result-oriented and effective way by means of the computer and visual-computing developments. FRAUNHOFER IGD has more than 200 employees. The budget amounts to over 17 million euros.


The participating department ‘Interactive Engineering Technologies’ pursues applied technology research in the area of design, analysis, visualization and interpretation. Our research enhances human-computer interaction and supports the user’s workflow using computer graphics technologies. This simplifies decisions during the work flow and operational sequences become more reliable and efficient. In the process we focus on the following topics: geometric processing, interactive simulation, real-time visualization and semantic computing. In these four topics we create innovative solutions for our customers from industry (e.g. automotive, aerospace, machine and plant construction) and software providers.

FRAUNHOFER IGD will be primarily involved in the work packages on analysis based design, infrastructure and dissemination. The development of subdivision volume data structures for consistent volumetric modelling is of primary interest in this proposal and will be investigated in the work package on analysis based design.
